Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the yogurt, lemon juice, garam masala, turmeric, coriander, cumin, cayenne pepper, and salt. Add the chicken pieces and mix well to coat. Cover and let marinate in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour, preferably overnight.
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the chopped onion and sauté for about 5-7 minutes until translucent. Stir in the minced garlic and ginger and cook for another 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  3. Transfer the sautéed onion mixture to the slow cooker. Add the marinated chicken along with any remaining marinade and the canned diced tomatoes. Stir to combine.
  4. Cover the slow cooker and set it to low. Cook for 6-7 hours, or on high for 3-4 hours, until the chicken is tender.
  5. About 30 minutes before serving, stir in the heavy cream or coconut milk and sugar. Allow the sauce to thicken and become creamy.
  6. Once ready, taste and adjust seasoning if necessary. Serve hot, garnished with fresh cilantro.
