Milk candy is a beloved treat enjoyed in various cultures around the world. Its rich, sweet flavor and creamy texture make it an irresistible confectionery. This article will guide you through a delightful homemade milk candy recipe, giving you all the details to create this delicious dessert at home.
Ingredients
Scale:
2 cups whole milk
1 cup sweetened condensed milk
1 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup unsalted butter
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract (or flavor of choice)
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup chopped nuts (e.g., almonds, pistachios, or walnuts) (optional)
1/4 cup dried fruit (e.g., raisins or cranberries) (optional)
Instructions
In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine 2 cups of whole milk, 1 cup of sweetened condensed milk, and 1 cup of granulated sugar. Stir continuously over medium heat until the sugar dissolves completely, which typically takes about 5 minutes.
Once the mixture is smooth and bubbling slightly, add 1/4 cup of unsalted butter and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Continue stirring until the mixture begins to thicken, about 10-15 minutes.
Reduce the heat to low. Stir the mixture constantly for another 15-20 minutes, or until it pulls away from the sides of the pan and reaches a fudge-like consistency.
Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in 1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract for flavor. If you're adding nuts or dried fruits, fold them in at this stage.
Prepare a square baking dish (about 8x8 inches) by greasing it lightly with butter or lining it with parchment paper.
Pour the candy mixture into the prepared dish, spreading it evenly with a spatula. Allow it to cool at room temperature for about 30 minutes before transferring it to the refrigerator.
Chill the milk candy for at least 2 hours, or until firm. Once set, remove it from the dish and cut it into small squares.
