This easy shawarma bread recipe will guide you through creating delicious, warm flatbreads that are perfect for wrapping your favorite shawarma fillings.
Ingredients
Scale:
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon sugar
1 tablespoon instant yeast
1 cup warm water (110°F or 43°C)
2 tablespoons olive oil
Instructions
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, sugar, and instant yeast. Stir until evenly mixed.
Pour in the warm water and olive oil. Mix with a wooden spoon or your hands until the dough begins to come together.
Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface. Knead for about 8-10 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours or until it has doubled in size.
Once risen, punch down the dough to remove excess air. Divide it into 8 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball and let them rest for 10-15 minutes covered with a cloth.
Preheat a skillet or grill over medium-high heat. On a floured surface, roll out each dough ball into a circle about ¼ inch thick.
Place one rolled-out dough onto the hot skillet. Cook for about 1-2 minutes or until bubbles begin to form and the underside is golden brown. Flip and cook for another 1-2 minutes until the second side is also golden.
As you cook each piece, stack them on a plate and cover with a clean kitchen towel to keep warm and soft.
