French Onion Butter Rice is a deliciously rich and creamy side dish inspired by the flavors of French onion soup. This comforting recipe combines perfectly cooked rice with the sweetness of caramelized onions, a touch of butter, and the delightful essence of onion-flavored broth. Ideal for serving alongside steak or as a standalone dish, this recipe promises to elevate any meal with its savory depth and creamy texture.
Ingredients
Scale:
1 cup long-grain rice (such as basmati or jasmine)
1 teaspoon salt
2 cups vegetable broth (or beef broth for a richer flavor)
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 large onions, thinly sliced
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 teaspoon sugar
Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
In a large skillet over medium heat, add the olive oil and let it heat for about 1 minute. Add the sliced onions, sprinkle with salt and sugar, and stir to combine. Cook the onions, stirring occasionally, for about 15-20 minutes or until they become soft and golden brown. Reduce heat if they start to burn, and consider covering the skillet for a few minutes if they seem to be cooking too quickly.
Once the onions are ready, push them to the side of the skillet, add the butter, and let it melt. Add the uncooked rice and toast it in the butter for about 2 minutes, stirring frequently until the rice becomes slightly translucent.
Pour in the broth and stir everything together. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and cover the skillet. Let it simmer for about 18-20 minutes or until the rice is tender and has absorbed all the liquid.
Once cooked, remove the skillet from heat. Fluff the rice with a fork and fold in the caramelized onions. Taste and adjust seasoning with additional salt and pepper if needed.
Transfer the French Onion Butter Rice to a serving dish, and enjoy it warm.
