This delightful twist on the classic sandwich combines savory ham and cheese with sweet French toast-like flavors, all baked together to create a hearty and satisfying dish.
Ingredients
Scale:
8 slices of thick-cut bread (e.g., brioche or challah)
6 large eggs
2 cups milk
1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
1 cup diced ham
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Salt and pepper to taste
Powdered sugar for dusting
Maple syrup for serving
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Cut the bread into 1-inch cubes.
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, Dijon mustard, vanilla extract, cinnamon, salt, and pepper until well combined.
In a greased 9x13-inch baking dish, layer half of the bread cubes at the bottom. Then sprinkle half of the diced ham and half of the cheese over the bread. Repeat with the remaining bread, ham, and cheese.
Pour the egg mixture evenly over the layered bread and toppings. Press down slightly to ensure all bread cubes are submerged.
Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes. Then, remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes.
Allow the casserole to cool for about 10 minutes before slicing. Dust generously with powdered sugar and serve warm with maple syrup.
