Ingredients
Scale:
1 lb ground beef
1 small onion, finely chopped
1 bell pepper, diced (any color)
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 teaspoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
Salt and pepper to taste
8 slices of Texas toast
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
Pickles (optional)
Sliced jalapeños (optional)
Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions
In a large skillet, over medium heat, add the ground beef. Cook until browned and cooked through, breaking it apart with a spatula, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary.
Add chopped onion, bell pepper, and minced garlic to the skillet. Sauté until the vegetables are soft and the onions become translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
Stir in ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, chili powder, and cumin. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to low and let it cook for another 10 minutes.
While the filling simmers, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Place the Texas toast slices on a baking sheet. Bake in the preheated oven for 5-7 minutes, or until lightly golden brown and crisp on one side.
Remove the baking sheet from the oven. Spoon a generous portion of the sloppy joe mixture onto the toasted side of each slice of Texas toast. Sprinkle equal amounts of cheddar and mozzarella cheese over the filling.
Return the baking sheet to the oven and bake for an additional 5-7 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Remove from the oven, let cool for a minute, and add optional toppings like pickles, jalapeños, or fresh parsley. Serve immediately.
